Research projects
Research is a key part of the work we do. The most recent project is one carried out looking at the skills needs of migrant workers in the cleaning industry in Wales. There were responses from employers all over Wales who took part in the questionnaires and surveys and the findings are due to be released shortly.
Higher Education Forum
A forum for Higher Education Institution (HEI) providers was set up in October 2007. This aimed to feed employer needs in to HEIs and to create dialogue between HE providers and employers.
It follows our research that showed there was a need for better undergraduate provision that satisfied the requirements of employers, more effective engagement between business and HE and more refined HE/FE provision. So far seven universities are part of the forum. Meetings are being heldwith employers and work is underway to further develop HE and employer engagement.
Built Environment Forum
Wales has a Built Environment Forum to take forward Building Companies: Building Skills – the Welsh Assembly Government's Strategy for the Built Environment. This forum was set up in early 2008 and two members of Asset Skills Cymru's Board, including our chair, Phil Toms, are members. Over the next two years the Forum will be looking at:
Skills development
Business development
Developing indigenous businesses
Procurement
Asset Skills is working with the other Built Environment SSCs (Construction Skills, Summit Skills and EU Skills) as well the newly appointed Strategic Director for the Built Environment and our employers on the forum in taking the strategy forward.
