The Sector Skills Council for the places where we live and work

Infection Prevention and Control National Occupational Standards Review Project

Public Consultation (19 September to 31 October 2011)

This is your opportunity to influence the development of National Occupational Standards which will underpin future learning and development within the area of Infection Prevention and Control. We need your knowledge and expertise to ensure that the revised standards reflect current best practice.

Background

A suite of 13 Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) National Occupational Standards (NOS) were developed by Skills for Health, the Sector Skills Council for health, in 2006/07 in partnership with stakeholders from across the UK. Given changes to practice since this time it is now deemed appropriate to review the NOS to ensure they are fit for purpose.

What are National Occupational Standards (NOS)?

NOS define what a competent person should know and be able to do when they carry out a particular work activity. NOS are used to underpin future learning and development including qualifications development and a range of workforce development activities.

Who is involved?

The project is being run by Skills for Health who has established a UK wide steering group including representation from the Infection Prevention Society, health and government departments, academia and the independent sector. A working group has also been established to work on the detail of the standards with membership from IPC practitioners from across the UK and from a variety of settings.

How do I get involved?

It is important that NOS are fit for purpose and user friendly. Therefore, Skills for Health are now encouraging feedback on the draft revised NOS from practitioners and stakeholders involved in the area of Infection Prevention and Control. A list of the draft NOS titles for review can be downloaded by clicking here.

1. Register your interest in the consultation by emailing nathan.laxton@skillsforhealth.org.uk

2. Log on to www.skillsforhealth.org.uk/consultations

Feedback may be via a consultation questionnaire, and/or through commenting directly onto any of the 13 NOS (using track changes in Word). Participants are encouraged to review at least 2 of the NOS but ideally, subject to time available, up to 5 or more. The consultation period will run from 19 September to 31 October 2011. All responses will be analysed and discussed with the project's Strategy Group and Working Group.

Please get involved. If you have any queries about the consultation process, please contact nathan.laxton@skillsforhealth.org.uk
