Property and Planning

Asset Skills works within the property and planning industries to find solutions to problems employers have highlighted to us.

Our Sector Skills Agreement (SSA) research found there is a major shortage of town planners and an ageing, male-dominated surveyor population.

There are other job roles we promote including estate agents, letting agents, block managers, energy inspectors and auctioneers.

Current projects include:

  • Surveying - we are working on redressing the age and gender imbalance within the profession.  We helped develop a pilot programme that delivered an apprenticeship scheme for new young surveyors.
  • Planning - we produced a Graduate Training & development research project with the Improvement Service in Scotland.
  • We have supported and promoted a new Foundation Degree in Development Management - a fundamental part of the planning role.
  • We have successfully piloted interactive careers materials to promote planning to young people in Northern Ireland and plan to roll this out across the UK.
  • Licensing of estate agents - a review by Sir Bryan Carsberg has called for minimum qualifications for estate agents, in issue in our SSA action plan.  We supported this review by making our research and help available where necessary.
  • Industry guidance and training - we produce guidance and training products that arise from new working practices and legislation.
