There are various providers of training, ranging from colleges to private training companies.
Courses vary in duration and content, but most offer a mix of distance learning and contact with a tutor or study group.
Contact an awarding body for a list of the training providers for their qualification. All awarding bodies and most accreditation schemes will be able to give advice about which route is suitable for you – starting with an appraisal of your skills and knowledge to identify additional training you may need to meet the National Occupational Standards.
There is currently no public funding available in England and Wales to directly support training costs – but it is hoped that this may change in the next few months. However, candidates for Domestic Energy Assessor training may be able to obtain a Career Development Loan that would assist with the cost of training fees. More information would be available from the training provider and via this advisory website – http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/EducationAndLearning/AdultLearning/CareerDevelopmentLoans/index.htm
In England, however, it is possible that the Regional Learning and Skills Council will be able to help indirectly through their Management and Leadership grants. These are usually eligible for organisations employing less than 250 staff and vary between £1000 and £4000, some or all of which need to be ‘matched’ by the employer. For more details, email EPBD@assetskills.org, including details of the area in which you work.
