The Sector Skills Council for the places where we live and work
The project is being launched in September 2007 and will enable those who have completed GCSEs or A Levels to required standards to take their first steps into this challenging and varied career. Applicants will experience a stringent recruitment process with the CSTT before being put forward to undertake an employer interview. If potential recruits complete these two phases successfully they will be offered an apprenticeship position within an employer.
CSTT Trust Manager, Amy Leaning, states "I am delighted to be working with Asset Skills in the delivery of our SEEDA funded project to develop a new course in surveying for young people. This opportunity gives CSTT a fantastic chance to pilot our new scheme with a view to developing a programme that can be rolled out, initially to the South East of England and then on a national level. This will bring about enhanced opportunities for all involved - employers, young people and the surveying industry in general."
Those who join the scheme having completed GCSEs will complete a 12 month Foundation Programme before undertaking the Diploma in Surveying Practice and NVQ3 in Surveying, Property and Maintenance. A-Level candidates do not need to complete the Foundation Programme. The training programme will lead to Technical Membership of the RICS, with the opportunity to progress to Chartered status if required.
With an ageing work force in a profession that has major issues over future recruitment and only 10% of chartered surveyors who are female , a new and radical style of attracting new entrants needs to be undertaken. Asset Skills Head of Property Services Liz Black comments "We envisage that this innovative approach will attract a diverse pool of potential surveyors who would not have considered entering the profession through a more traditional route."
The project which is being funded by South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) will pilot in the South East this September before extending to a full regional roll out.
