The Sector Skills Council for the places where we live and work
Plans are underway to develop a programme to help councillors in Northern Ireland adapt to new enhanced roles which will involve dealing with housing and planning issues.
Asset Skills has been meeting with representatives from the Northern Ireland Local Government Association (NILGA) and the proposed 11 "super councils".
The discussions have focused around the Review of Public Administration, in particular the impact of 26 local authorities being reduced to 11, and the greater responsibility for planning and housing development that will sit with these new bodies.
Asset Skills board member and Northern Ireland President of Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) David McCallum has highlighted the need for professional development for local councillors and the NILGA has now endorsed this need.
Asset Skills will now work in partnership with NILGA and CIH to promote the professional development of both the councils and councillors.
