Project to train estate agents gets go ahead in Wales

Asset Skills, the Sector Skills Council for the property industry, has secured funding from the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) to help pay half the course costs for 150 estate agency staff.

The industry-related qualifications they can take include the Technical Award Sale of Residential Property, Residential Letting and Property Management, run by the National Federation of Property Professionals (NFOPP) awarding body.

Awards in Auctioneering and Commercial Property can also be studied by using WAG's Step Up Sector Funding. The Technical Awards are part of the Apprenticeship framework and are the qualifications of choice in the industry.

The project will provide support for the trainees to ensure as high a take up and success rate as possible.

This follows research by Asset Skills that shows a need to improve the skills of those working in estate agency in sales and lettings. It is estimated less than 15% of staff in Wales and the rest of the UK have any sort of vocational qualification.

It is hoped this scheme will double the number of qualified staff in Wales. Anyone interested will be able to register for the funding from January 2009.
