How did you first hear about jobs in housing?
I left school and was seeking full time employment. Through the New Deal employment scheme I heard about Ark Housing Association and applied for the job. In researching the job I became aware that Ark was a Housing Association and this is how I came to know about housing.
How did you find further information about a career in housing?
I researched on the internet, read Ark Housing's annual report. I was attracted by the variety of tasks and scope of the work.
What was it that appealed to you when you were thinking about a job in housing?
The stable career, a stable salary and also one with the prospect of professional development.
How did you get your first job in housing?
I was out of work at time and was registered with the New Deal initiative. The opportunity arose to be interviewed at Ark Housing and luckily I got the post.
Initially it was a temporary contract for six months but I performed well and was offered a permanent contract.
What personal skills and qualifications did you have that helped you secure your first job in housing?
My qualifications at the time were limited but I am a very people orientated person. I believe this was my greatest asset particularly as I deal with our tenants daily.
I was very young but very willing to learn new things and wasn't afraid of hard work.
What skills & training have you gained since you have had your job in housing?
Describe a typical day?
My job varies every day, I take repair calls, and general enquires from the public. I work under the Chief Executive to make sure all his paper work is done i.e. board papers.
What would you tell people who are interested in a housing career?
I would tell them that it is a good career. It offers job security and good holidays. You also get to learn new things all the time and complete lots of courses.
