The Sector Skills Council for the places where we live and work
Housing Officers supervise the day-to-day maintenance and management of rented properties for
the housing association or local authority in which they work. Housing Officers could expect to
provide support to tenants, monitor standards of service and delivery and allocate tenancies
depending on people's needs. Housing Officers can make positive contributions to people's lives.
As with most jobs there are many ways into the profession. An example of a progression route could be;
I started as a modern apprentice at Tameside Council at the age of 17 in the Housing Admin Office. I gained experience relevant areas and at the same time I completed an NVQ level 1 and 2 in Administration at Oldham College. I then took a Rent Control Assistant position and began managing rent accounts and collecting rent arrears. It really suited me as I wanted to be more involved with the public. During this time I helped a Housing Officer and began to learn more about tenancy enforcement and tenancy management.
I needed a new challenge so I applied for a Housing Management Officer position. I started managing an area in Droylsden which I loved. It
was definitely challenging but making a positive impact on a community made it all worth while and very enjoyable. I am now a Neighbourhood Management Officer.
I still really enjoy the work I do and the positive changes I make to communities. Alongside my role I have completed an HNC in Housing Studies at Salford University and have just applied to complete the Leadership Development Course to further my career.
