The Sector Skills Council for the places where we live and work
This Apprenticeship deals with work in the housing sector.
Housing officers supervise the day-to-day maintenance and management of rented properties that belong to housing associations and local authorities. They deal with both people and property, assessing the needs of people applying for housing, allocating vacant accommodation and dealing with any problems that crop up, from anti-social behaviour to broken boilers.
As a Housing apprentice, your duties will depend on your employer and whether they're part of the public sector, the voluntary sector, or the private rented sector. You could be assessing housing need in applicants, letting homes, collecting rents, or managing the development of new homes.
On this Apprenticeship, you'll learn about customer services, housing management, lettings and allocation, homelessness and advice, supported housing (which covers shared housing, hostels and sheltered housing), and repairs and maintenance.
The work is largely office-based, with some time spent away visiting tenants, attending meetings, and inspecting buildings. It's a big, important job – after all, shelter is one of the most basic human needs. You'll need to deal sensitively with a wide range of people, and come up with real solutions to their problems.
