The Sector Skills Council for the places where we live and work

About Asset Skills and the areas we cover

Asset Skills is a Sector Skills Council (SSC) and works to improve the skills of the UK workforce.

There are 25 SSCs that cover many different sectors. The areas we cover are facilities management, housing, property, planning, cleaning and parking.

Facilities Management (FM)

You may not be familiar with the term 'facilities management' but it is happening all around you and is a fast growing industry.

Shopping centres, sports stadiums, schools, colleges, hospitals and big city skyscrapers - all these places have facilities and services that need to be looked after, inside and out.

Facilities Managers must be good at juggling a number of jobs at the same time. Their list of responsibilities includes the electrics, air conditioning, catering, pest control, security, reception desk, grass cutting, cleaning and much more.

Housing

A career in housing can be highly rewarding.

A housing officer, or manager, helps make people's lives better by improving the housing and communities they live in.

You would need to be an excellent communicator and have an understanding of people's different cultures and needs.

Property and Planning

There's a wide range of jobs in property and planning with plenty of scope for getting out and about, meeting people and visiting sites and buildings.

If you're looking for a career that offers variety, a job in property may be for you.

Cleaning

Cleaners are part of an essential workforce that keeps society healthy and free of disease.

Highly skilled cleaners are in demand and the job provides flexible working hours and plenty of opportunities.

Often cleaning work is part-time which suits people with other commitments.

Many cleaners work their way up the cleaning career ladder to become supervisors, caretakers or facilities managers, while others start their own businesses after gaining relevant experience.
