The Sector Skills Council for the places where we live and work

Employability

Employability and the Skills for Business Network

"Employability defines the knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours required by individuals to seek, obtain and sustain employment at all levels in the labour market"

(Skills for Business Network Definition, 2007)

Asset Skills is the designated lead Sector Skills Council for Employability.

We co-ordinate a UK-wide project to promote the business benefits of Employability in the workplace across the Sector Skills Council (SSC) network.

The project works closely with Government agencies and other key stakeholders across the four nations to bring together good practice and share it across the 25 SSCs.

It began in December 2006, funded by Sector Skills Development Agency (SSDA), the forerunner to the UK Commission for Employment and Skills (UKCES).

Project background

Asset Skills undertook a project in 2006 to determine the characteristic features of entry level occupations and the baseline skills expected by employers. It worked with five sister SSCs: Construction Skills, Goskills, Skillsfast-UK, Skills for Logistics and Skillsmart-Retail as well as Jobcentre Plus and the former DfES. The project developed baseline skills matrices for specific entry level job roles with a view to using them in training and career information and guidance. The SfBN Employability Project builds on and expands this work.
